Japanese Sound Can Be Used To Describe A Martial Artist Breaking Bricks

ばきばき BakiBaki

A personal favorite though not so commonly used is the phonomime ばきばき. Often written in its katakana form, it describes any sound similar to cracking branches or the cracking of one’s knuckles. The sound of some electro DJ’s, for instance Justice, Boys Noize, and Daft Punk can be characterized as ばきばき.

On Yahoo! Answers, we can see an example of ばきばき being discussed in detail:

バキバキ音とはどういう意味ですか?PerfumeのCDのレビューで「バキバキで最高です」のような内容のものを見ました。 バキバキとはどういうような音に対する表現なのでしょうか?

What does “bakbaki sound mean”? I saw this being used on a review of Perfume’s CD, which said something like “the best bakibaki sound!” What is this an expression for?

重低音ベースの音のことです
エレクトロミュージックではかなり聞く音です
PerfumeならGAMEやedgeとかですね
あとは海外ならジャスティスやボーイズノイズなんかがそうです

It refers to the deep sound of bass, which is found quite a bit in electronic music. Perfume’s GAME or edge tracks are good examples, as well as tracks by the likes of Justice and Boys Noise.

Even though defined as an adverb, ばきばき can also be a verb:

この音学すごいばきばきしてるね!

Kono ongaku sugoi bakibaki shiteru ne!

This music is really bassy eh!

When used as an adjective, it takes the –to particle:

ところが庭から海をのぞむと、津波がを越え、バキバキと音を立てながら近づいてくるのが見えました。
